The NetBSD Project has recently launched NetBSD version 6.0, which boasts major upgrades and enhancements like scalability improvements on multi-core systems, support for thread-local storage and a new Logical Volume Manager.

Available for download on various platforms, the latest version introduces a new packet filter that has been designed especially for multi-core systems. NPF can also handle TCP/IP traffic filtering, stateful inspection and network address translation. New subsystems to handle flash devices and NAND controllers are also one of the major changes to be found in the NetBSD 6.0.

Other changes include an experimental CHFS filesystem for flash devices, support for the MPLS protocol, a BSD-licensed PGP (News - Alert) implementation and updates to several ports including ARM, PowerPC, Xen and MIPS.

Currently, the ARM port supports Cortex-A8 processors and a number of new systems-on-a-chip, as well as offers support for the popular Raspberry Pi mini-computer. Officials confirmed that full support for the Raspberry Pi and other "major ARM (News - Alert) improvements" will be added in a future release.

Further, the PowerPC port, with improved symmetric multi-processing, now supports Book E Freescale (News - Alert) MPC85xx processors, while the Xen port includes SMP support for Xen domU kernels, initial suspend and resume support, and support for PCI pass-through.

In related MPLS new, recently UNSi was presented with the Best of Show Award in the Best Service Provider Solution category.

“The breadth of products and solutions that are showcased in this year’s ITEXPO (News - Alert) Austin Exhibit Hall have raised the bar in terms of innovation and quality within the communications and technology industries,” said Rich Tehrani, TMC (News - Alert) CEO and conference chairman, in a statement. “We’re pleased to honor the Best of Show Award winners, and we congratulate them for differentiating themselves in various technology categories amongst a large and highly competitive field.”
