Recently, Cisco (News - Alert) has successfully completed the acquisition of privately held Cariden Technologies, Inc., a Sunnyvale, Calif.-based supplier of network planning, design and traffic management solutions for telecommunications service providers.

Under the terms of the agreement, Cisco paid approximately $141 million in cash and retention-based incentives in exchange for all shares of Cariden. This deal also includes ownership of all of Cariden's capacity planning and management tools for IP/MPLS (multi protocol label switching) networks.

Cariden's products and technology are expected to advance Cisco's nLight technology for IP and optical convergence and will allow service providers to improve both the programmability of their networks and the utilization of existing network assets across the IP and optical transport layers.

As part of the acquisition, the Cariden team will be integrated into Cisco's service provider networking group.

Cisco has been on an acquisition roll as of late and now Cloupia, a Santa Clara, Calif.-based software company that automates converged data center infrastructures, allowing enterprises and service providers to simplify the deployment and configuration of physical and virtual resources from a single management console , will be maintained by the company in addition.

This newly inked agreement includes Cloupia's infrastructure management software and talent. When combined with Cisco's data center management solutions, enterprises and service providers will be able to seamlessly manage pools of computing power, network services, storage and virtual machines as a unified whole in order to deploy and deliver IT services more rapidly and at lower costs.

The Cloupia team will be integrated into Cisco's Data Center Group and the company paid approximately $125 million in cash and retention-based incentives in exchange for all shares of Cloupia.
